Our Blessings Disguised as Trials and the Importance of the Sacrament

Life is full of challenges. Often, trials seem to darken our horizon and make us question whether we are truly loved by our Heavenly Father.

Yet, President Spencer W. Kimball taught:

“There is nothing that happens to us which, if we accept it with patience, cannot work for our good.”

Every difficulty can become an opportunity for spiritual growth.

What today we see as suffering may tomorrow reveal itself as a disguised blessing, a means by which the Lord prepares us to become stronger, humbler, and more like His Son.

Trials as Blessings

Elder Neal A. Maxwell explained that trials are “the Lord’s furnace of affliction” and that without them, we could not learn the lessons necessary for our eternal progress. Moroni reminds us that it is through our weaknesses that we learn to depend upon the grace of Christ:

“And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me” (Ether 12:27).

When we face trials, we can remember that Heavenly Father has not abandoned us. On the contrary, He is shaping in us a purer faith and a character more like that of Christ.

The Sacrament: A Weekly Renewal

In the midst of our trials, the Sacrament becomes a spiritual oasis.

President Thomas S. Monson said: “As we partake of the Sacrament, we renew our covenants with the Lord and receive strength to overcome the temptations of the coming week.”

The Sacrament is not just a ritual; it is a solemn reminder of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and His invitation to follow Him.

Each Sunday, as we partake of the bread and water, we once again promise to:

Always remember Christ.

Take His name upon us.

Keep His commandments.

In return, we are promised that His Spirit will be with us always

(Doctrine and Covenants 20:77, 79).

The Healing Power of Covenant

As we partake of the Sacrament, we bring our burdens, pains, and mistakes to the feet of the Savior. He already suffered in Gethsemane and on the cross for each of us. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland taught: “However late you think you are, however many chances you think you have missed, however many mistakes you feel you have made… I testify that you have not traveled beyond the reach of divine love.”

Thus, even though our trials may be heavy, the Sacrament reminds us that we are not alone.

It renews our faith, brings us peace, and assures us that blessings may be hidden even within adversity.

Our trials are not punishments but stepping stones toward eternity.

Many of the blessings we long for come disguised as challenges, to strengthen us and make us more like the Savior.

And the Sacrament is the weekly reminder of this truth: that through Jesus Christ, all of our trials can be transformed into eternal blessings.
