Reflections between Voice Acting and Eat, Pray, Love
In life, as in dubbing, everything depends on your point of view.
Or as we call it in the art of voice: the viewpoint.
The viewpoint is the lens through which a character sees their world—but it’s also the way you look at your own life.
During the class “Las Entrañas del Doblaje” with maestro Víctor Kuri, we learned that in dubbing, viewpoint is not just a vocal technique.
It’s the emotional compass that helps us connect with a character—understand their pain, desires, and purpose—and bring them to life through voice.
But what if we applied that same lens to everyday life?
That’s where the magic of Eat, Pray, Love comes in.
🍝 Eat, Pray, Love: A Change of Viewpoint in Real Life
Elizabeth Gilbert, author of this iconic book (and portrayed by Julia Roberts in the movie), teaches us that viewpoint can transform the way we live.
She decided to radically shift her point of view:
• From guilt to pleasure in Italy (Eat)
• From control to faith in India (Pray)
• From fear to conscious love in Bali (Love)
Each stage was a change in viewpoint.
Each country represented a new emotional focus.
🎧 The Connection Between Voice and Life
In dubbing, when an actor doesn’t connect with the character’s viewpoint, the voice sounds empty.
The same happens in life.
If we don’t connect with our true viewpoint, we live on autopilot—without presence, without truth.
Elizabeth Gilbert realized this during her journey:
“You can’t see the world through the same eyes that led you to get lost.”
Just as an actor must shift perspective to give authenticity to a role, we must change our viewpoint to reconnect with joy, faith, or love.
✨ Where are you living from today?
This is the great parallel between the art of voice and the art of living:
• From what viewpoint are you waking up each morning?
• From fear, hurry, guilt… or from gratitude, joy, and hope?
In dubbing, a line can carry a thousand nuances depending on the viewpoint.
In life, a day can feel light or heavy… depending on your own viewpoint.
💡 Reflection:
Whether in front of a microphone or within your own story—you can always change the viewpoint.
You can choose to savor life like in Italy,
let go like in India,
or love like in Bali.
Remember:
The voice you use to narrate your life is just as important as the voice you use to tell a story.
Today I ask you:
Are you being the conscious actor of your own life…
or just a distracted reader of your own script?
🎙️ A Quote to Treasure:
“Change your viewpoint, change your story. Because in the end, we are all narrators of our own movie.”
