Labor Day: More Than a Day Off, a Reminder of the Value of Work

Every first Monday of September, the United States celebrates Labor Day.

This year, in 2025, it fell on September 1st. While many see it as just a long weekend to rest, shop, or enjoy a barbecue with family, its origins and true meaning go much deeper.

Labor Day was born in the late 19th century as a tribute to the labor movement and the struggles that shaped labor history: the eight-hour workday, fairer conditions, and the recognition of workers’ dignity.

At its core, it is a reminder that every social and economic achievement is built on the daily efforts of men and women who, through their work, lay the foundation of a nation.

The true meaning of work

Today, in a world that moves at full speed, it is easy to reduce “work” to productivity, deadlines, or paychecks. But Labor Day invites us to pause and look beyond:

Work is consistency, discipline, and also creativity.

It is effort, but also passion for what we do.

It is not measured only in hours, but in the mark we leave on those around us.

A necessary pause

This holiday also reminds us of something essential: rest is part of work. Taking a day to reflect, give thanks, and spend time with our loved ones acknowledges that we are not machines—we are human beings who need balance to keep moving forward.

Honoring what we do

Labor Day is not only for Americans. Though its origin is specific to the U.S., the message is universal: every person deserves dignity, respect, and gratitude for what they contribute through their work. Whatever our occupation may be, each of us builds, day by day, a piece of the common story.

✨ Reflection:

Labor Day reminds us that no matter how small or invisible our effort may seem, nothing works without it.

Let us give thanks for our own work, honor the work of others, and remember that behind every collective achievement lie millions of individual stories of effort and perseverance.
