Sunday, I arrived at church differently—wearing pants.
My skirt had torn, and I had no other choice. It might seem like a small detail, but I have to admit, I felt uncomfortable, as if something wasn’t quite right.
While sharing this with Shane, I told him that I didn’t feel good because I wasn’t dressed the way I normally do for church. His response was short, yet powerful:
“Is your heart in the right place?”
That question struck me and stayed echoing deep within.
Focusing on the Outside
So often we worry too much about what can be seen: clothes, appearances, how others might judge us. We get caught up in external details and forget that what truly matters lies beyond fabrics, colors, or styles.
Scripture reminds us:
“The Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
(1 Samuel 16:7)
God doesn’t measure us by our outfits or by appearances, but by the sincerity of our worship and the willingness of our hearts.
The True Place of the Heart
Shane’s question made me reflect: What really matters when we come to worship, to serve, to live?
It’s not about whether we wear a skirt or pants, whether we fit into a tradition or expectation. What matters is the intention with which we present ourselves before God and others.
If our hearts are aligned with faith, with love, and with humility, then we are in the right place—even when the outward details aren’t “perfect.”
A Question for Everyone
That question is not only for me. It’s an invitation for all of us:
• Is my heart in the right place when I speak to my family?
• Is it in the right place when I judge others?
• Is it in the right place when I serve, when I work, when I love?
The heart is the true temple, and it reveals whether we are living in harmony with our faith and values.
Conclusion
That day I realized the torn skirt didn’t matter. Not even the pants I wore to church really mattered. What mattered was the place of my heart—a heart willing to worship, to give thanks, to be present.
Clothes may fail, plans may change, but if the heart remains in the right place, everything else falls into place.
Because in the end, the only thing God truly looks at is not what we wear, but how our hearts beat before Him and before life.
